25th ICID Congress

International Congress was organized by ICID organization since 1951 on Irrigation and Drainage. The first ICID congress was organized in 1951 in Delhi. Till now, the ICID organization has organized 24 ICID Congress on Irrigation and Drainage.

Now, the next ICID Congress on Irrigation and Drainage is 25th in number. This is organized by the Indian National Committee of ICID which is INCID. Along with it, the 74th International Executive Council meeting was also being organized by the INCID organization.

  • Another purpose of the 25th ICID Congress on Irrigation and Drainage was to develop a platform where all the issues related to irrigation, drainage, or flood will be discussed.
  • The professionals and a wide spectrum of other stakeholders can share their knowledge and experience in these problems and solutions on this platform.

Congress Theme: Tackling Water Scarcity in Agriculture

The water used in irrigation across the globe is nearly 70% to 80% of the total water withdrawn from the earth. As the temperature of the earth rises, the demand for water for irrigation will increase in the future. Providing sufficient water to agricultural land is a serious issue to think about and proper measures are needed to be taken.

The problem of irrigation water will become a challenge for food security. We know, the population is also increasing which leads to more demand for food and forestry products. To meet the demand for food, fiber, and fuel it is crucial to have resources for water that is needed for irrigation.

Many regions are already having a shortage of fresh water. The result of the water shortage has seen an adverse effect on the socio-economic development of the region. The major use of water is in agriculture, industry, homes, and municipal uses. Water pollution is another constraint that needs attention. We need to look for possible ways to manage the water use for agriculture.

We need to increase water productivity, have means to save water, manage water for agriculture, and also require to maintain the yield. This management of water can be done at plot level or irrigation land acre level. We can develop new technologies for water management. The use of water for irrigation can be reduced with new technology without impacting the yield. Food security is also a concern for the rising population.

The efficient use of available water can lead to an increase in productivity. We can focus on new resources of water rather than on the conventional resources of water. The aim of the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage -ICID is to make a water-secure world. Also, do work towards the reduction of poverty and hunger. The goal is Enabling Higher Crop Productivity with Less Water and Energy.

The ICID has a vision for the year 2030 and doing work to achieve all these goals at the end of 2020. The idea of ICID is to have a forum where all of the professionals can share their knowledge towards the 2030 goals. The goal of the 25th ICID Congress is to discuss all of the alternatives to water resources that lead to reducing water scarcity.

The main questions for the 25th ICID Congress on Irrigation and Drainage are given below, on which discussion will be addressed.

  • Ques 64: What alternative water resources could be tapped for irrigated agriculture?
  • Ques 65: Which on-farm techniques can increase water productivity?
